Dental Crowns and Veneers
We often receive patient calls describing eating something simple like a piece of bread and suddenly cracking a tooth. Chances are that your tooth already had damage to begin with and biting into the bread just finished the job.
Our teeth crack for a number of reasons: trauma, an accident, grinding, clenching, or biting into something particularly hard. Sometimes teeth break because of severe internal decay. We successfully treat most severely cracked teeth with dental crowns.
The Right Crown for the Right Situation
Depending on the location of your tooth, Dr. Matt Bradshaw may recommend a gold or a porcelain crown to repair it. A crown fits over your natural tooth completely, like a protective cover. Crowns stabilize and protect your teeth by holding together a compromised tooth structure and by absorbing some of the force from chewing.
If your cracked tooth is in the front of your smile, we will probably recommend a porcelain crown so that it matches the colour of your natural teeth and blends in when you smile.
If your crown is on a molar that absorbs most of the force from chewing, a gold crown may work better because they wear more evenly and will last longer, especially if you grind your teeth.
We can discuss the type of crown that will work best for you and outline your options so that you understand the pros and cons of each.
Crown Preparation and Restoration
When you come to Jones Lake Dental needing a crown to restore the health of your tooth, we start by evaluating your existing tooth structure. We remove any decay, if necessary, and make room for your crown by prepping your tooth. Dr. Bradshaw may also need to create a core buildup if you do not have enough tooth structure to support a crown.
Once he completes your tooth prep, he will create impressions of your teeth for your permanent crown and make a temporary to hold you over until your permanent crown comes back from our dental lab.
At your final appointment, Dr. Bradshaw will put on your permanent crown and make any final adjustments he finds necessary in order to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.
Attractive Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are thin, tooth-coloured covers that we can place over your teeth to cover flaws such as stubborn stains, crooked teeth, and worn teeth. Veneers allow us to make dramatic cosmetic enhancements quickly and permanently, often without the need for orthodontics.
Veneers allow patients to improve one or two annoying teeth or major improvements with a full cosmetic smile makeover.
Dental Restoration Care
As with all dentistry, regular brushing and flossing is essential to maintaining the health of your teeth. Regular appointments at Jones Lake Dental will help you avoid problems like gum disease and decay that could put your dentistry at risk.
