Composite and Amalgam FIllings
Decay, or dental caries, is one of the most common dental conditions faced by both adults and children. Decay occurs when bacteria collect in the plaque on your teeth and create an acidic environment that eats through the hard protective enamel.
Fortunately, advancements in technology, knowledge, and prevention allow us to stop decay in its tracks. When you make regular appointments with us, we look for signs of decay and other dental conditions so that we can treat them early and protect your teeth.
Despite regular visits and excellent home care, most patients do experience dental decay at some point during their lives. It’s not the end of the world, however, because we have solutions to restore the health and function of your smile.
White Tooth-Coloured Fillings
If you have decay (a cavity) on your front teeth where it could affect your smile, Dr. Matt Bradshaw may suggest a white, custom, tooth-coloured filling so that it is not visible when you smile and laugh. White fillings are long lasting and attractive. They repair your smile without marring your appearance.
When we place white fillings in your teeth, we will first make sure that you are completely comfortable and then Dr. Bradshaw will gently remove all traces of decay and bacteria. When he places the white filling (composite resin), he will match it to your natural tooth colour and apply it in layers, curing it in between so that it hardens and bonds to the tooth. Finally, he will shape and polish your filling so that it blends well and looks flawless!
Dental Bonding Restorations
If you have a chipped or broken tooth, we may be able to repair it with composite resin. If you need a minor repair to smooth your tooth, or to improve a misshapen tooth, dental composites can provide a versatile, affordable, and quick option. One of the benefits of aesthetic improvements with dental bonding is that it requires very little prep work and retains your natural tooth structure.
Durable Amalgam Fillings
If you have a cavity on a back tooth, we might recommend an amalgam filling because they can withstand the force from chewing. Amalgams are silver and provide a long-lasting, durable solution to restore your tooth. Since they are dark, we tend to use them mostly on your back teeth, where no one will see them.
Studies have shown amalgams to be completely safe for dental use. If we need to replace one of your old amalgam fillings, we will take proper precautions to ensure safe removal and replacement.
